What is the Cost of Keeping Your Existing System?
Some homeowners may feel “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” Here are some often-overlooked considerations. Sometimes you put multiple repairs into a system that is on its last legs. As of January 2006, new air conditioner efficiency standards came into effect. Most systems installed before this date cost up to 20% or more to operate than today’s base efficiency models.
Air conditioners come in all shapes and sizes. Your indoor unit works by moving air across the indoor evaporator coil, and heat is absorbed into the refrigerant in this coil. The refrigerant is then circulated outside, where the heat is exhausted with a fan blowing across the outside condenser coil. An air conditioner doesn’t “add” cool air; it removes heat from the air.
Split System Air Conditioners
Usually a unit sits outside – this is referred to as a condenser. The condenser has wires and copper tubes that lead inside. An air conditioning evaporator coil is located over, under or beside the indoor unit. The unit style gets the name “Split System” from the fact that the unit is split into an indoor and outdoor section.
The air conditioning condenser (outdoor portion) will normally be located on the ground beside the house or on the roof. The indoor unit and coil (air handler or heater) is usually located in a crawl space, closet or attic and is connected to a duct system that circulates the air through the home.
Package Air Conditioners
Package air conditioners are self-contained units that come preassembled. They sit outside the home on the ground or roof. In trying to identify this type of system, you won’t normally see copper tubes leading to the house, but you could see ductwork, or a large boxed-in area connecting the unit to the house.
Heaters operate by forcing air across the strip heater. Electric furnaces typically cost more to operate than other types of systems. Look for a large electric coil, similar to the one inside a toaster.
Heat pumps operate just like air conditioners, but in reverse. Heat pumps look just like the outside units of air conditioners, so check your thermostat. If it has a “back-up” or “secondary” heat switch, you most likely have a heat pump.
Geothermal heat pumps are some of the most expensive units to install, but some of the most efficient units to operate. They do not have outdoor units. To see if you have a geothermal heat pump, first establish if you have a heat pump, then check outside to see whether you have an outdoor unit with a fan.
